Original Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). Published by Iseya Ichibei, circa 1850. Sheet from the series "Comparison of the Spirit of Able Men." Woodblock print, oban tate-e. Features kabuki actor Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Shoki Hanbei, wearing a robe decorated with bell-cords and demon heads. Poem inscribed above. Dimensions approximately 14 x 9 1/2 inches (35.5 x 24 cm). Antique item with discoloration, holes, and wear consistent with age.

Kuniyoshi, a pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni, is one of the three principal Ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period, alongside Kunisada (Toyokuni III) and Hiroshige. He is renowned for his warrior prints and depictions of bizarre and comic subjects. Kuniyoshi also created fine Western-style landscape prints in the 1830s and early 1840s, showcasing his imaginative and innovative approach.
